Preventing Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth structure and can affect both the enamel (the outer coating of the tooth) and the dentin layer of the tooth.

Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), such as breads, cereals, milk, soda, fruits, cakes, or candy are left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine to form plaque, which clings to the teeth. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, creating holes in the teeth called cavities.
To prevent tooth decay:
  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste. Preferably, brush after each meal and especially before going to bed.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with dental floss or interdental cleaners, such as the Oral-B Interdental Brush, Reach Stim-U-Dent, or Sulcabrush.
  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacks. Avoid carbohydrates such as candy, pretzels and chips, which can remain on the tooth surface. If sticky foods are eaten, brush your teeth soon afterwards.
  • Check with your dentist about use of supplemental fluoride, which strengthens your teeth.
  • Ask your dentist about dental sealants (a plastic protective coating) applied to the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars) to protect them from decay.
  • Drink fluoridated water. At least a pint of fluoridated water each day is needed to protect children from tooth decay.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exam.
A mouth rinse containing fluoride can help prevent tooth decay, according to the American Dental Association.
Researchers are developing new means to prevent tooth decay. One study found that a chewing gum that contains the sweetener xylitol temporarily retarded the growth of bacteria that cause tooth decay. In addition, several materials that slowly release fluoride over time, which will help prevent further decay, are being explored. These materials would be placed between teeth or in pits and fissures of teeth. Toothpastes and mouth rinses that can reverse and "heal" early cavities are also being studied.

Home Remedies for Dry Facial Skin

Foods rich in vitamin E can be beneficial for dry skin sufferers.

Dry skin is most commonly caused by environmental factors, including cold weather, low humidity levels and excessive bathing. Dry facial skin can be extremely uncomfortable for sufferers, and though it often goes unnoticed by others, it can also be embarrassing in some cases. However, there are a few natural home remedies for dry facial skin that may be able to replenish your skin's natural moisture. These remedies have not been approved by the FDA for effectiveness of treating dry skin.

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a common home remedy for dry facial skin. To use grapeseed oil on the face, simply massage a tablespoon into the skin for one to two minutes. Leave the grapeseed oil on the skin for about one hour, and then rinse the skin with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel. Grapeseed oil is not recommended for those with typically oily skin, even if skin is dry to due to environmental factors.

Avocado and Lime Juice

Avocado and lime juice is a common folk remedy for dry skin, as well as conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Mix the fruit of one-half ripe avocado with one tablespoon freshly-squeezed lime juice in a small glass or wooden bowl. Mash the fruit with the back of a spoon or the tines of a fork. Spread the mixture on the skin and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the avocado off with cool water and pat the skin dry with a clean towel.

Natural Aloe Vera Gel

Natural aloe vera gel is commonly used to treat burns and reduce the effects prolonged sun exposure. Natural aloe vera can also be used on dry skin to reduce inflammation and soothe the area. It is best to use an aloe vera product that is pure aloe vera gel, as added ingredients may irritate dry skin. If you live in an area that has fresh aloe vera plant leaves for sale, the gel on the inside of the leaves can be used as well. To use natural aloe vera gel, simply apply a small amount to the skin and let it dry. There is no need to wash aloe vera gel off, unless it irritates your skin.

Egg Yolk and Orange Juice

The mixture off an egg yolk and one tablespoon of freshly squeezed orange juice is a common folk remedy for dry facial skin. To use this remedy, combine one egg yolk and one tablespoon of freshly squeezed orange juice in a small bowl and mix with the tines of a fork. Apply the mixture to the skin with a brush in a thin coat, and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse the skin dry with cool water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Eating More Vitamin E-rich foods

Vitamin E-rich foods like sunflower seeds, papaya, collard greens, mustard greens and olives can help dry skin, as vitamin E can help to regenerate skin cells faster while preventing skin cell damage from free radicals. Vitamin E supplements are widely available as well if you are unable to include vitamin E-rich foods into your regular diet.

Home Remedies for Dry Skin Patches

Aloe vera can be helpful in treating dry skin patches.

Patches of dry skin are attributed to several factors. Though simple changes in climate can dry exposed areas, particularly during the winter, skin issues can also point to recurring medical conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. According to the book "Alternative Cures: More Than 1,000 of the Most Effective Natural Remedies," many home remedies work for dry skin patches regardless of the cause. If your condition worsens, however, you may want to seek prescription treatment.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera supplies your skin with the moisture that it craves, particularly during cold, dry winter months. "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies" recommends applying aloe vera to your dry skin patches several times a day until they fade. To use the gel from an aloe plant, cut off one leaf at the base of the stem with a sharp knife. Squeeze the gel from inside the leaf into your palm and rub it gently into your dry skin. If you don't have access to an aloe vera plant, the aloe vera gel available at drugstores works just as well.

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E oil has healing properties that are particularly helpful for skin, hair and nails. "Alternative Cures" says that there are a couple of different ways that you can treat your dry skin patches with vitamin E oil. The first method is to purchase vitamin E capsules and ingest one each day. The second, quicker method involves applying the oil directly to your skin. Puncture one of the capsules with a needle and squeeze the oil onto your skin. Massage the oil into the dry patches until it's absorbed, and repeat the treatment once daily until the skin heals.

Horsetail

"Alternative Cures" says that one of the best home remedies for the discomfort associated with eczema is a horsetail compress. The dried herb, which is available in many natural food stores, reduces swelling, quells itching and moisturizes dry skin. Combine 1 tsp. of dried horsetail with 1 cup of water and bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat. Let the liquid boil for about 10 minutes, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool sightly. Soak a soft, clean towel in the horsetail infusion and place it on your dry skin. Wrap the compress with a dry towel to minimize dripping and keep it warm and leave it in place for at least 10 minutes. Repeat the treatment twice daily for best results.

Witch Hazel

A witch-hazel-based treatment is best for dry skin patches that are scaly and red, according to "Jude's Herbal Home Remedies." Mix 4 tbsp. each of lemongrass, rose petals, witch hazel and corn meal. Measure out 2 tbsp. of the mixture into four cups of boiling water. Allow the mixture to steep for 30 minutes, then add it to a hot bath. Soak in the bath for 10 to 15 minutes, keeping your dry skin patches immersed at all times

Natural Hair Remedies

Home Remedies for Dry Hair

Dry, damaged hair often needs more intense conditioning than other hair types. Using natural hair remedies such as a weekly or bi-weekly hot oil treatment or deep conditioning hair pack can work wonders to restore dry, frizzy hair.

hot oil natural hair remedies

Deep Conditioning Hot Oil Treatment

  1. Combine 2 tablespoons jojoba or almond oil with 6 drops sandalwood, 3 drops chamomile OR palmarosa and 1 drop ylang ylang in a small glass.
  2. Put the glass into a bowl of very hot water. Stir the hot oil mixture until it reaches a nice warm temperature.
  3. Apply the hot oil straight onto your dry hair or dampen your hair slightly first - most people generally find that one way works better for them. Experiment to see which is best for you.
  4. Pile your hair on top of your head and put on a shower cap or wrap your hair in plastic wrap. (I use a plastic bag from the grocery store and clip it closed at the front.) Wrap a towel around your head and relax for at least 20 minutes. A couple of hours to overnight can be great for really dry, over-processed hair. (If you keep it on overnight, protect your pillow with an old towel.)
  5. Wash the hair oil out. A great trick for getting the oil out is to massage some shampoo into your hair before you get it wet. This helps break down the oil and makes it easier to wash out.

Deep Conditioning Honey Hair Pack

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 1 tablespoon Jojoba or Sweet Almond Oil
(or your choice of carrier oils)
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 3 drops Lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops Rosemary essential oil

Directions

  1. Beat together the honey, oil and egg yolk. Stir in the essential oils.
  2. Dampen your hair, then use your fingers to massage the mixture into your hair.
  3. Pile your hair on top of your head and put on a shower cap or wrap your hair in plastic wrap. Wrap a towel around your head and relax for at least 20 minutes.
  4. Rinse your hair well, then shampoo to remove the conditioner.

Natural Hair Remedies for Oily Hair

Oily hair can look heavy and greasy even when you wash it every day. Hair gets greasy-looking when the oil glands on your scalp are working overtime to product sebum, the body's natural oil. Here are a few natural hair remedies you can use to help cope with oily hair.

  • Use a clear, natural shampoo  Wash your hair daily, massaging the shampoo into your scalp and leaving the shampooo in your hair for at least 5 minutes. If your hair still feels oily after you've washed and dried your hair, you need to wash it twice in a row. Shampoo can take away only so much oil at once, so don't be afraid to use lots or wash twice.

  • Use a herbal hair rinse to reduce shampoo residue and help slow down your scalp's oil production. Use the recipe .

  • Oily hair often needs much less conditioning than normal or dry hair. Lack of moisture is not the problem! If you find that the ends of your hair are dry, try putting the TINIEST amount of Jojoba oil onto the ends only.

  3. Strain out the herbs and pour into a large dark glass or PET plastic bottle.
  4. Add 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar and 10 drops Peppermint, 5 drops Tea Tree and 5 drops Rosemary essential oil.

To use your herbal hair rinse, shake the bottle, then simply pour it over your hair after conditioning, rub it gently into your scalp and rinse.

Natural Hair Remedies for Gray Hair

My research on remedies for gray hair turned up mixed reviews about the effectiveness of natural treatments for reversing gray. That said, ALL of the natural hair remedies used the herb Sage, and some people swore it really worked for them.

gray hair natural remedies

Rosemary-Sage Natural Hair Dye

Ingredients

  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1/2 cup dried sage
  • 1/2 cup dried rosemary

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a pot. Simmer for 30 minutes, then steep for several hours. Strain, then use the resulting liquid for the colorant.
  2. Pour the liquid onto your hair and leave on until dried. Rinse and dry.
  3. Repeat once or twice weekly until you reach the desired shade, then monthly to maintain color.

It's my understanding that this method of covering gray works cumulatively over time - it's not an instant fix.

Also, I would suggest using this recipe in conjunction with the basic shampoo and conditioner recipes, using the herbal infusions for gray hair included with the recipes.
I'd love to know these natural hair remedies this really work for gray hair (and I'm sure I'm not the only one!) so if you try it, I'd be grateful if you'd share the results on the Hair Help page.

Natural Hair Remedies for Dandruff

Everyone sheds millions of skin cells from their scalp every day, mostly without ever noticing it. Dandruff can sometimes be caused by an overgrowth of microscopic fungus living on your scalp. These natural hair remedies are formulated to help solve this problem.

If you live in a cold, dry climate, your dandruff may be the result of an over-dry scalp. Grey Hair - Remedy of Grey Hair

Hair is made of epidermis cells. An oily substance called sebum is secreted from sebaceous glands in the skin at the roots of the hair which determines the color of the hair and also provides nutrition to it. Hair does not receive nutrition from external resources. It gets it only through blood.

Melanin is a natural substance in the body. When due to known or unknown reasons there is a decay in it, the hair roots and cells do not get enough of it or if the root cells become weak, there is a premature graying of the hair. The following reasons are considered to be the causes of premature graying:
  1. Decay of melanin,

A faulty diet and mental worries are the two primary causes of premature greying of hair. Mental worries produce extraordinary tension in the skin of the scalp; this interferes with the supply of vital nutrition necessary for the health of the hair.
A drop in melanin production may be caused by a lack of the mineral copper. Eat foods such as crab, oysters, sunflower seeds, cashews and almonds, which have significant amounts of copper.

Amputation and diabetes: How to protect your feet

Good diabetes management and regular foot care help prevent severe foot sores that are difficult to treat and may require amputation.

Diabetes complications include nerve damage and poor blood circulation. These problems make the feet vulnerable to skin sores (ulcers) that can worsen quickly and are difficult to treat. Proper diabetes management and careful foot care can help prevent foot ulcers.
When foot ulcers do develop, it's important to get prompt care. A nonhealing ulcer that causes severe damage to tissues and bone may require surgical removal (amputation) of a toe, foot or part of a leg.
Here's what you need to know to keep your feet healthy, and what happens if amputation is necessary.

Preventing foot ulcers

The best strategy for preventing complications of diabetes — including foot ulcers — is proper diabetes management with a healthy diet, regular exercise, blood sugar monitoring and adherence to a prescribed medication regimen.
Proper foot care will help prevent problems with your feet and ensure prompt medical care when problems occur.

Tips for proper foot care include the following:
  • Inspect your feet daily. Check your feet once a day for blisters, cuts, cracks, sores, redness, tenderness or swelling. If you have trouble reaching your feet, use a hand mirror to see the bottoms of your feet, place the mirror on the floor if it's too difficult to hold, or ask someone to help you.
  • Wash your feet daily. Wash your feet in lukewarm water once a day. Dry them gently, especially between the toes. Use a pumice stone to gently rub the skin where calluses easily form. Sprinkle talcum powder or cornstarch between your toes to keep the skin dry. Use a moisturizing cream or lotion on the tops and bottoms of your feet to keep the skin soft.
  • Don't remove calluses or other foot lesions yourself. To avoid injury to your skin, don't use a nail file, nail clipper or scissors on calluses, corns, bunions or warts. Don't use chemical wart removers. See your doctor or foot specialist (podiatrist) for removal of any of these lesions.
  • Trim your toenails carefully. Trim your nails straight across. Carefully file sharp ends with an emery board. Ask for assistance from a caregiver if you are unable to trim your nails yourself.
  • Don't go barefoot. To prevent injury to your feet, don't go barefoot, even around the house.
  • Wear clean, dry socks. Wear socks made of fibers that pull (wick) sweat away from your skin, such as cotton and special acrylic fibers — not nylon. Avoid socks with tight elastic bands that reduce circulation, as well as thick bulky socks that often fit poorly and irritate your skin.
  • Buy shoes that fit properly. Buy comfortable shoes that do not fit tightly and that provide support and cushioning for the heel, arch and ball of the foot. Avoid high heels or narrow shoes that crowd your toes. If one foot is bigger than the other, buy shoes in the larger size. Your doctor may recommend specially designed shoes (orthopedic shoes) that fit the exact shape of your feet, cushion your feet and evenly distribute weight on your feet.
  • Don't smoke. Smoking impairs circulation and reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood. These circulatory problems can result in more severe wounds and poor healing. Talk to your doctor if you need help to quit smoking.
  • Schedule regular foot checkups. Your doctor or podiatrist can inspect your feet for early signs of nerve damage, poor circulation or other foot problems. Schedule foot exams at least once a year or more often if recommended by your doctor.
  • Take foot injuries seriously. Contact your doctor if you have a foot sore that doesn't begin to heal within a few days or other persistent problems with your feet. Your doctor will inspect your foot to make a diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate course of treatment.

What if amputation is the only option?

Treatments for foot ulcers vary depending on the severity of the wound. In general, the treatment employs methods to remove dead tissues or debris, keep the wound clean, and promote healing. When the condition results in a severe loss of tissue or a life-threatening infection, an amputation may be the only option.

A surgeon removes the damaged tissue and preserves as much healthy tissue as possible. After surgery, you'll be monitored in the hospital for a number of days. It may take four to eight weeks for your wound to heal completely.

8 Lifestyle Tips to Avoid Diabetes Complications

Maintaining proper control of your diabetes will help you avoid diabetes complications such as heart problems, nerve pain and neuropathy, and foot problems. Here's what you can do right now:

1.Lose weight if you need to. About 80% to 90% of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Losing the excess weight helps control blood sugars

2.Monitor your blood sugar closely. Check glucose levels two or more times a day. Keep your blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible or within the range advised by your doctor. It helps to keep a log so you can track progress and determine the effect of diet and activity on your levels.
Know that high blood sugar levels can wreak much damage, including damaging the blood vessels that feed the eye's retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy, which can result in blurred vision and eventually blindness. High blood sugar levels can damage the kidneys, too. Get regular tests, called A1C, to find out your average blood sugar for the past two to three months. Most people with type 2 diabetes should aim for an A1C of 7% or lower. Ask your doctor how often you need to get an A1C test.

3.Pay attention to your carbohydrate intake. Keep track of how many carbohydrates you eat, and how often. Managing your carbs can help keep blood sugar under control. Aim for high-fiber, complex carbs such as green vegetables, fruit, legumes, and whole grains.

4.Keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels under control. Heart disease is a common complication of diabetes, so try to keep your blood pressure and cholesterol at normal levels. Ask your doctor to set goals for your cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. Work closely with your doctor to reach those goals, and take medications as prescribed.

5.Keep moving. Regular exercise can help keep weight under control. Exercise also helps control blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels, and also reduces stress. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day of aerobic exercise five days a week. Start out more slowly if you have been sedentary. Exercises for diabetes control can include walking, dancing, low-impact aerobics, swimming, tennis, or a stationary bike. You can break up the 30 minutes -- by taking a 10-minute walk after every meal, for instance. Strength training and stretching are also recommended.

6.Get sufficient sleep. When you are sleep deprived, you tend to eat more, and you can put on weight, setting you up for complications. People with diabetes who get enough sleep often have healthier eating habits and improvement of blood sugar.

7.Manage stress. Stress and diabetes don't mix. Excess stress can elevate blood sugar. Learn stress reduction techniques that work for you. Among them: Sitting quietly for 15 minutes, meditating, practicing yoga.

8.See your doctor at least yearly. At your annual physical, your doctor (or doctors) should give you a dilated eye exam, blood pressure check, foot exam, and screen for other complications such as signs of kidney damage, nerve damage, and heart disease.

The Disease of Anger and its treatment

Anger is one of the evil whispers of Shaytaan, which leads to so many evils and tragedies, of which only Allaah knows their full extent. For this reason Islam has a great deal to say about this bad characteristic, and the Prophet (S.A.W.W) described cures for this “disease” and ways to limit its effects, among which are the following:

(1) Seeking refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan:
Sulayman ibn Sard said: “I was sitting with the Prophet (S.A.W.W), and two men were slandering one another. One of them was red in the face, and the veins on his neck were standing out. The Prophet (S.A.W.W) said, ‘I know a word which, if he were to say it, what he feels would go away. If he said “I seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan,” what he feels (i.e., his anger) would go away.’” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 6/337)
The Prophet (S.A.W.W) said: “If a man gets angry and says, ‘I seek refuge with Allaah,’ his anger will go away.” (Saheeh al-Jaami‘ al-Sagheer, no. 695)

 (2) Keeping silent:
The Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.W) said: “If any of you becomes angry, let him keep silent.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, al-Musnad, 1/329; see also Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 693, 4027)
This is because in most cases, the angry person loses self control and could utter words of kufr (from which we seek refuge with Allaah), or curses, or the word of divorce (talaaq) which would destroy his home, or words of slander which would bring him the enmity and hatred of others. So, in short, keeping silent is the solution which helps one to avoid all that.

(3) Not moving:
The Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.W) said: “If any of you becomes angry and he is standing, let him sit down, so his anger will go away; if it does not go away, let him lie down.”
The narrator of this hadeeth is Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him), and there is a story connected to his telling of it: he was taking his camels to drink at a trough that he owned, when some other people came along and said (to one another), “Who can compete with Abu Dharr (in bringing animals to drink) and make his hair stand on end?” A man said, “I can,” so he brought his animals and competed with Abu Dharr, with the result that the trough was broken. (i.e., Abu Dharr was expecting help in watering his camels, but instead the man misbehaved and caused the trough to be broken). Abu Dharr was standing, so he sat down, then he laid down. Someone asked him, “O Abu Dharr, why did you sit down then lie down?” He said: “The Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.W) said: . . .” and quoted the hadeeth. (The hadeeth and this story may be found in Musnad Ahmad, 5/152; see also Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 694).
According to another report, Abu Dharr was watering his animals at the trough, when another man made him angry, so he sat down . . . (Fayd al-Qadeer, al-Manaawi, 1/408)
Among the benefits of this advice given by the Prophet (S.A.W.W) is the fact that it prevents the angry person from going out of control, because he could strike out and injure someone, or even kill – as we will find out shortly – or he could destroy possessions and so on. Sitting down makes it less likely that he will become overexcited, and lying down makes it even less likely that he will do something crazy or harmful. Al-‘Allaamah al-Khattaabi, may Allaah have mercy on him, said in his commentary on Aboo Daawood: “One who is standing is in a position to strike and destroy, while the one who is sitting is less likely to do that, and the one who is lying down can do neither. It is possible that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told the angry person to sit down or lie down so that he would not do something that he would later regret. And Allaah knows best.”(Sunan Abee Daawood, with Ma‘aalim al-Sunan, 5/141)

(4) Following the advice of the Prophet (S.A.W.W):
Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that a man said to the Prophet (S.A.W.W), “Advise me.” He said, “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet (S.A.W.W) told him, “Do not become angry.” (Reported by al-Bukhaaree, Fath al-Baaree, 10/456)
According to another report, the man said: “I thought about what the Prophet (S.A.W.W) said, and I realized that anger combines all kinds of evil.” (Musnad Ahmad, 5/373)

(5) Do not become angry and Paradise will be yours (a saheeh hadeeth, see Saheeh al-Jaam‘, 7374. Ibn Hajr attributed it to al-Tabaraanee, see al-Fath 4/465):
Remembering what Allaah has promised to the righteous (muttaqeen) who keep away from the causes of anger and struggle within themselves to control it, is one of the most effective ways of extinguishing the flames of anger. One of the ahaadeeth that describe the great reward for doing this is: “Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allaah will fill his heart with contentment on the Day of Resurrection.” (Reported by al-Tabaraanee, 12/453, see also Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 6518)
Another great reward is described in the Prophet’s (S.A.W.W) words: “Whoever controls his anger at the time when he has the means to act upon it, Allaah will call him before all of mankind on the Day of Resurrection, and will let him choose of the Hoor al-‘Ayn whoever he wants.” (Reported by Aboo Daawood, 4777, and others. It is classified as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 6518).

(6) Knowing the high status and advantages offered to those who control themselves:
The Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.W) said: “The strong man is not the one who can overpower others (in wrestling); rather, the strong man is the one who controls himself when he gets angry.” (Reported by Ahmad, 2/236; the hadeeth is agreed upon) . The greater the anger, the higher the status of the one who controls himself. The Prophet (S.A.W.W) said: “The strongest man is the one who, when he gets angry and his face reddens and his hackles rise, is able to defeat his anger.” (Reported by Imaam Ahmad, 5/367, and classified as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 3859)
Anas reported that the Prophet (S.A.W.W) passed by some people who were wrestling. He asked, “What is this?” They said: “So-and-so is the strongest, he can beat anybody.” The Prophet (S.A.W.W) said, “Shall I not tell you who is even stronger then him? The man who, when he is mistreated by another, controls his anger, has defeated his own shaytaan and the shaytaan of the one who made him angry.” (Reported by al-Bazzaar, and Ibn Hajr said its isnaad is saheehAl-Fath, 10/519)

 (7) Following the Prophet’s (S.A.W.W) example in the case of anger:
The Prophet (S.A.W.W) is our leader and has set the highest example in this matter, as is recorded in a number of ahaadeeth. One of the most famous was reported by Anas, may Allaah be pleased with him, who said: “I was walking with the Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.W), and he was wearing a Najraanee cloak with a rough collar. A Bedouin came and seized him roughly by the edge of his cloak, and I saw the marks left on his neck by the collar. Then the Bedouin ordered him to give him some of the wealth of Allaah that he had. The Prophet (S.A.W.W) turned to him and smiled, then ordered that he should be given something.” (Agreed upon. Fath al-Baaree, 10/375)
Another way in which we can follow the example of the Prophet (S.A.W.W) is by making our anger for the sake of Allaah, when His rights are violated. This is the kind of anger which is praiseworthy. So the Prophet (S.A.W.W)became angry when he was told about the imaam who was putting people off the prayer by making it too long; when he saw a curtain with pictures of animate creatures in ‘Aa’ishah’s house; when Usaamah spoke to him about the Makhzoomee woman who had been convicted of theft, and he said “Do you seek to intervene concerning one of the punishments prescribed by Allaah?”; when he was asked questions that he disliked, and so on. His anger was purely for the sake of Allaah.

 (8) Knowing that resisting anger is one of the signs of righteousness (taqwaa):
The righteous (al-muttaqoon) are those praised by Allaah in the Qur’aan and by His Messenger (S.A.W.W). Paradise as wide as heaven and earth has been prepared for them. One of their characteristics is that they (interpretation of the meaning) “spend (in Allaah’s Cause) in prosperity and in adversity, [they] repress anger, and [they] pardon men; verily, Allaah loves al-muhsinoon (the good-doers).” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:134]
These are the ones whose good character and beautiful attributes and deeds Allaah has mentioned, and whom people admire and want to emulate. One of their characteristics is that (interpretation of the meaning) “. . . when they are angry, they forgive.” [al-Shooraa 42:47]

(9) Listening to reminders:
Anger is a part of human nature, and people vary in their anger. It may be difficult for a man not to get angry, but sincere people will remember Allaah when they are reminded, and they will not overstep the mark. Some examples follow:
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that a man sought permission to speak to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him), then he said: “O son of al-Khattaab, you are not giving us much and you are not judging fairly between us.” ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) was so angry that he was about to attack the man, but al-Hurr ibn Qays, who was one of those present, said: “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, Allaah said to His Prophet (S.A.W.W) (interpretation of the meaning): ‘Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the foolish’ [al-A‘raaf 7:199]. This man is one of the foolish.” By Allaah, ‘Umar could go no further after al-Hurr had recited this aayah to him, and he was a man who was careful to adhere to the Book of Allaah. (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, 4/304).
This is how the Muslim should be. The evil munaafiq (hypocrite) was not like this when he was told the hadeeth of the Prophet (S.A.W.W) and one of the Companions said to him, “Seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan.” He said to the one who reminded him, “Do you think I am crazy? Go away!” (Reported by al-Bukhaaree, al-Fath, 1/465). We seek refuge with Allaah from failure.

(10) Knowing the bad effects of anger:
The negative effects of anger are many; in short they cause damage to one’s own self and to others. The angry person may utter words of slander and obscenity, he may attack others (physically) in an uncontrolled manner, even to the point of killing. The following story contains a valuable lesson:
‘Ilqimah ibn Waa’il reported that his father (may Allaah be pleased with him) told him: “I was sitting with the Prophet (S.A.W.W) when a man came to him leading another man by a rope. He said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, this man killed my brother.’ The Messenger of Allaah (S.A.W.W) asked him, ‘Did you kill him?’ He said, ‘Yes, I killed him.’ He asked, ‘How did you kill him?’ He said, ‘He and I were hitting a tree to make the leaves fall, for animal feed, and he slandered me, so I struck him on the side of the head with an axe, and killed him.’ . . .” (Reported by Muslim, 1307, edited by al-Baaqi).
Anger could lead to less than killing, such as wounding and breaking bones. If the one who caused the anger runs away, the angry person turns his anger in on himself, so he may tear his clothes, or strike his cheeks, or have a fit, or fall unconscious, or he may break dishes and plates, or break furniture.
In the worst cases, anger results in social disasters and the breaking of family ties, i.e., divorce. Ask many of those who divorced their wives, and they will tell you: it was in a moment of anger. This divorce results in misery for the children, regret and frustration, a hard and difficult life, all as a result of anger. If they had remembered Allaah, come to their senses, restrained their anger and sought refuge with Allaah, none of this would have happened. Going against the sharee‘ah only results in loss.
The damage to health that results from anger can only be described by doctors, such as thrombosis, high blood pressure, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat) and hyperventilation (rapid, shallow breathing), which can lead to fatal heart attacks, diabetes, etc. We ask Allaah for good health.

 (11) The angry person should think about himself during moments of anger:
If the angry person could see himself in the mirror when he is angry, he would hate himself and the way he looks. If he could see the way he changes, and the way his body and limbs shake, how his eyes glare and how out of control and crazy his behaviour is, he would despise himself and be revolted by his own appearance. It is well-known that inner ugliness is even worse than outer ugliness; how happy the Shaytaan must be when a person is in this state! We seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytaan and from failure.

(12) Du‘aa’:
Du‘aa’ is always the weapon of the believer, whereby he asks Allaah to protect him from evil, trouble and bad behaviour and seeks refuge with Him from falling into the pit of kufr or wrongdoing because of anger. One of the three things that can help save him is: being fair at times of contentment and of anger (Saheeh al-Jaami‘, 3039). One of the du‘aa’s of the Prophet (S.A.W.W) was:
“O Allaah, by Your knowledge of the Unseen and Your power over Your creation, keep me alive for as long as You know life is good for me, and cause me to die when You know death is good for me. O Allaah, I ask You to make me fear You in secret and in public, and I ask You to make me speak the truth in times of contentment and of anger. I ask You not to let me be extravagant in poverty or in prosperity. I ask You for continuous blessings, and for contentment that does not end. I ask You to let me accept Your decree, and for a good life after death. I ask You for the joy of seeing Your face and for the longing to meet You, without going through diseases and misguiding fitnah (trials). O Allaah, adorn us with the adornment of faith and make us among those who are guided. Praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds.”

Anger can break your heart

Think about this the next time someone cuts you off in traffic or in a grocery store line: Anger can bring on a heart attack or stroke.

That's the conclusion of several studies at Harvard Medical School and elsewhere. One study of 1,305 men with an average age of 62 revealed that the angriest men were three times more likely to develop heart disease than the most placid ones.
Angry older men, as stereotypes go, are most vulnerable. But excessive ire can take a toll at any age. Researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine tracked 1,055 medical students for 36 years. Compared with cooler heads, the hotheads were six times more likely to suffer heart attacks by age 55 and three times more likely to develop any form of heart or blood vessel disease.
The conclusion is clear: Anger is bad for you at any age. "Among young adults, it's a predictor of premature heart disease later in life," says Harvey Simon, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Most anger research has focused on men, so whether the same risk applies to women remains unknown. One study, published in 1995, found that, during two hours after an angry outburst, a individual's risk of having a heart attack was more than twice that of someone who had not lost their cool. Out of 1,623 people in that study, 501 were women.
"Almost all the anger research I'm familiar with has focused on men," notes Simon. "However, based on a 2006 study of road rage, I would guess that women are less prone to severe anger and thus to its deleterious effects, which include heart attack, stroke, and even impaired lung function."
A Harvard study, published in August, concluded that men who showed high hostility at the start of the eight-year investigation exhibited significantly poorer lung function at the end of it. "This research shows that hostility is associated with poorer [lung] function and more rapid rates of decline among older men," notes Rosalind Wright, an assistant professor at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Strokes of anger

Over the years, then, anger increases a man's and, probably less so, a woman's chances of heart disease. But, what about a single burst of rage, the guy who cuts in front of you just before the exit ramp? The answer apparently is "yes." In the Harvard study of 1,623 patients, which included 501 women, intensive anger more than doubled their risk of heart attack if the emotion occurred in the two hours previous to the heart attack.
In an evaluation of 200 stroke patients in Israel, researchers linked a bout of intense anger to a 14-fold increase in risk of stroke within two hours of the emotional incident.
Results from a study published this year found that of more than 2,500 patients treated in emergency rooms in Missouri hospitals, about 500 of them were torn by anger just before the injury. The greater the anger, the higher the risk, researchers concluded.
Anger comes in many doses: annoyance, irritability, frustration, vexation, resentment, animosity, ire, indignation, wrath, and rage, for example. Most people know when they're mad. If not, someone is bound to tell them so, sooner or later.
Psychologists have developed a scale that rates anger levels. It's a true-or-false test that presents statements like: "At times I feel like smashing things." "I easily become impatient with people," "I've been so angry at times that I've hurt someone in a physical fight."
Once you decide how irate you are, you need to decide what to do about it. For a start you can see your family doctor about the wisdom of taking an aspirin a day. Harvard researchers recently found that a single low-dose (81 mg) pill can reduce anger-caused heart attacks by 40 percent. In other words, a daily aspirin may cut the risk of breaking an angry heart by almost half.

How to be cool

Simon adds more advice in the September issue of Harvard Men's Health Watch, which he edits. "Try to identify the things that bother you most and do your best to change them," he suggests. "Learn to recognize warning signs of building tension, such as a racing pulse, fast breathing, or a jumpy, restless feeling. When you recognize such signals, take steps to relieve the tension. Often something as simple as a walk can cool things down."
Don't boil in silence. Talk out your feelings with your spouse, partner, or a good friend. If that doesn't work, write down your feelings. Try to explain to yourself why you are so irritated or vexed.
Simon also suggests learning to meditate, or experimenting with deep breathing exercises. Also, you can, with practice, change behaviors that light your fuse. Here are some examples: Don't always try to have the last word. Try not to raise your voice. Don't curse. Wait a few seconds when you feel on outburst coming on then try to express yourself calmly. Don't grimace or clench your teeth. Practice smiling.
If all such efforts fail, angry people can seek professional help. A 2002 study reported that stress management classes can protect men from anger-induced heart problems, and individual counseling may be even better.
Another possible resource involves evidence that some antidepressants may help protect against a broken heart. "Depression is hard on the heart," Simon says. "We think, although it hasn't been proven, that easing depression will ease anger as well."
"Regular exercise," Simon adds, "is also an excellent way to reduce both mental stress and physical risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, insulin, and body fat. And whether your fuse is short or long, you should never light up or expose yourself to tobacco in any form. And always be aware that emotions affect your health as much as diet and exercise. The link between mind and heart is strong."

Skin Protection Tips

How to Protect People From Getting Skin Cancer

Here are the basic strategies to shield children and adults from excessive sun exposure:
  • Reduce sun exposure from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. This is especially important from mid-spring through mid-fall.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat with at least a four-inch brim that produces a shadow that covers the face and neck. A bandana covering the neck can also help.
  • Wear tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing that covers as much of the body as possible.
  • When feasible, stay under shade (trees, physical structures), especially from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Wear sunglasses that include a warranty stating they provide 100 percent UVA and UVB (broad-spectrum) protection.
  • Liberally apply sunscreen to exposed skin 15 minutes before venturing outdoors. The sunscreen container should specify a sun protection factor (SPF) rating of 30 or above and should state that it provides broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection. Lotion- or cream-based sunscreens tend to adhere to the skin longer thus providing better  protection.
  • PABA-free sunscreens are recommended for persons with sensitive skin. Susceptible individuals may also want to avoid oxybenzone and dioxbenzone (check the label). To test if a given sunscreen will cause an allergic reaction, apply it on a small patch of skin on the underside of the forearm and monitor the skin's response for 24 hours. To reduce development of wrinkles and skin aging, look for sunscreens that contain either zinc oxide (z-cote) or Parsol 1789 (avobenzone). The July 2007 issue of Consumer Reports rates a number of sunscreen products.
  • Depending on outdoor conditions, sunscreen should be re-applied at least every two hours. Caution: Don't depend on sunscreens alone to protect children and adults from skin cancer. Instead, rely as much as possible on a combination of the guidelines previously listed.
  • Please note that the SPF number on the sunscreen tube indicates how many times longer--under ideal conditions--a person can stay out in the sun without beginning to turn red in comparison with the amount of time totally unprotected skin would start to burn. Research indicates these numbers are sometimes overstated.

    Self Skin Examination

Whether or not an individual practices the previously stated skin cancer prevention methods, it is wise to perform a self skin examination using a hand mirror at least once every one to three months and to seek an annual medical examination. The possible first signs of developing skin cancer can often be self-observed according to the characteristics described elsewhere  regarding moles and growths. See your doctor if you suspect any problems.

    Treating Skin Cancer

Finally, the good news is that most skin cancer can be successfully treated if detected in its earlier phases. About 90 percent of skin cancers are treated with surgery. Other solutions include radiation therapy, electrodesiccation (tissue destruction by heat), cryosurgery (tissue destruction by freezing), laser treatment, and drug therapy, etc. Of course the best treatment, as always, is PREVENTION.

    Honey & its uses

    The Holy Qur’an says:
“And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colours, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.” (Qur’an an-Nahl 68-69)

Listed below are some common problems which can be cured by honey:
Over the centuries, the great power and strength possessed by honey has been underestimated by scientists. It’s an element whose curing ability has surprised all levels of intellect. A few of the very many cures from honey have been outlined:

For burns: Apply freely over burns. It cools, removes pain and aids fast healing without scarring. Apart from being a salve and antibiotic, bacteria cannot live in honey.
Bed Wetting: A teaspoon of honey before bed aids water retention and calms fears in children.

Sleeplessness: A dessert spoon of honey in a mug of hot milk aids sleep and works wonders!
Hyperactivity: Honey is a mild sedative with minerals, vitamins, amino acids etc. Replace all white sugar with honey. White sugar is highly stimulating with no food qualities!
Nasal Congestion: Place a dessert spoon of honey in a basin of hot water and inhale fumes after covering your head with a towel over the basin. Very effective.
Wounds or Grazes: Cover wound with honey and a bandage. Excellent healer.
For Fatigue: Dissolve a desert spoon of honey in warm water or quarter honey balance of water in a jug and keep in the fridge. Honey is primarily fructose and glucose and so it is quickly absorbed by the digestive system. (Honey is a unique natural stabilizer – ancient Greek athletes took honey for stamina before competing and as a reviver after competition.)
Facial Deep Cleanser: Mix honey with oatmeal approx. 50/50 till thick and apply as a face-pack. Leave on for half an hour then wash off. Great as a deep cleanser for acne etc.
Poor Digestion: Mix honey with apple cider vinegar approx. 50/50 and dilute to taste with water. This aids digestion. (Also reputed to be wonderful for the joints.
Hair Conditioner: Mix honey with equal quantity of Olive Oil and cover head with a warm towel for half an hour then shampoo off. Feeds hair and scalp. Hair will never look or feel better!
Sore Throats: Let a teaspoon of honey melt in the back of the mouth and trickle down the throat. Eases inflamed raw tissues.
For Stress: Honey in water is a stabilizer – calms highs and raises lows. Use approx. 25 percent honey to water.
Anemia: Honey is the best blood en-richer by raising corpuscle content. The darker the honey the more minerals it contains.
Food Preservative: Cakes with honey replacing sugar stay fresher longer due to natural antibiotics. Reduce liquids by approx. one-fifth to allow for moisture in honey.
Heart Patients: These people are well advised to replace white sugar (sucrose) with honey, natural fructose and glucose.
Hay-fever: Chewing the tops of comb honey stimulates the immune system due to minute amounts of pollen. During the season chew for 20 minutes a teaspoon of bee capping (tops) five to six times per day. Highly effective and useful for asthma sufferers as well.
Baby’s Bottle: Four teaspoons of honey to a baby’s bottle of water is an excellent pacifier and multivitamin additive. If baby’s motions are too liquid then reduce by half a teaspoon; if too solid increase by half a teaspoon.
Teething: Honey rubbed on a baby’s gums is a mild sedative and anaesthetic.
Osteoporosis: English research has shown that a teaspoon of honey per day aids calcium utilization and prevents osteoporosis. Essential from age 50 onwards.
Long Life: One common fact worldwide is that the most long-lived people are regular users of honey. An interesting fact yet to be explained is that beekeepers suffer less from cancer and arthritis than any other occupational group worldwide.
Migraine: Use a dessertspoon of honey dissolved in half a glass of warm water. Sip at start of attack. If necessary repeat in 20 minutes. Always effective (insha’Allah) as migraine is stress related.
Conjunctivitis (pus in the eye): Honey dissolved in equal quantity of warm water. Apply, when cooled, as lotion or eye bath.

    Cough mixture
    6 oz. liquid honey
    2 oz. glycerine
    Juice of 2 lemons
Mix well. Bottle and cork firmly. Use as required
